Have you learned about the Gunas? No, they are perhaps not Disney people! Based on yoga there are three basic attributes or powers which make up anything. They are, rajas, tamas and sattva.
Rajas could be the energy of change, action and motion. Rajas could be the fuel of love and fire. Rajasic energy can also be from the day light hours. We certainly need energy to make energy to move properly through the duration of our society and lives. Go go go, do do do, when we've a lot of rajasic energy we may possibly seem to the surface world as acutely active! Does this sound like you? Maintaining a higher degree of rajasic power results in burn up! When rajas is out of balance the body and mind are overstimulated, the mind becomes disturbed and you experience plenty of uncontrollable feelings.
Foods that are rajasic include: hot food, fried foods, espresso / caffeinated beverages/ stimulants/ fish, eggs, candy, foods that are very bitter, dry, sour and salty. Eating on the go can be considered rajasic
Tamas can be regarded as the contrary of rajas. Tamasic energy is associated with a state of inertia and in-activity, heaviness and darkness. Becomes clouded when tamas has gone out of balance your ability to reason and you could experience the darker emotions such as anger or greed. Just as there's more rajasic energy present in daylight hours, tamasic energy is present during evening. People who are very tamasic may be frustrated or seem sluggish. Broadly speaking dis-ease states are tamasic.
Types of tamasic food include: beef, alcohol, cigarette, onions, fermented ingredients vinegar or strong cheese, stale food or over ripe food, very processed food or chemically treated. Overeating is considered tamasic.
Sattva is power that's in circumstances of harmony and balance. Positive emotional and intellectual states of pleasure and intelligence are connected with sattva. Someone who was experiencing a lot of sattvic energy would appear very happy. Sattvic energy is in line with healing states and in Ayurveda (yogas sister science) sattvic energy is actively developed. Sattvic power is most present through the times between light and dark- to put it differently sunset and dawn. Foods which are sattvic include: legumes, fruits and vegetables, real juice, whole-grains, milk, but-ter, nuts, seeds, sprouted seeds, baby and herb teas.
It is very important to realize that we all have all three gunas within us. And while this is true we tend to have a main guna. In line with the descriptions above can you find out what yours is? It is good to be aware of this because once you're aware of your main guna then you can predict how might respond to certain life circumstances too know your strengths and weaknesses. Youll know when you'll are usually cast out of balance and what you will have to do to create yourself back in balance.

. Consider for a minute the average American diet with overly refined and chemically-treated foods which are very tamasic. Modern science now confirms these food items are directly related to major diseases including cancer, obesity, diabetes and heart disease. As previously mentioned above a lot of tamasic energy leads to infection states. We also realize that foods in their full form such as fresh fruits, grains and vegetables (sattvic foods) are life sustaining and provide power and health.
